Silverfish: Facts, control, and treatment

silverfish

What are Silverfish?

Silverfish are tiny little insects, measuring up to about an inch long, that are silver/white in color and have resemblance to a fish. They have long antennae and 3 additional antennae that trail from the rear of their bodies. These pests are common in Florida homes, but often hard to spot due to their nocturnal and shy behavior. Silverfish prefer warm, humid areas such as basements, kitchens, attics, and bathrooms. Although they are destructive little insects, they are not harmful to humans.

Why are they in my home?

Silverfish invade your home for the same reasons any pest does: food, water, and shelter. They like starchy foods, such as flour and sugar, but will eat starches in other household items as well. These creepy crawlers will eat the glue on wallpaper, book bindings, old papers, and even the starch in clothing.

What can I do to prevent Silverfish from infesting my home?

There are steps you can take to prevent them from entering your home, as well as keeping other intruders out as well.

  1. Vacuum and sweep floors often.
  2. Always clean up crumbs/spills.
  3. Keep food sealed in airtight containers.
  4. Eliminate moisture, keep windows closed and even purchase a dehumidifier for extra effort.
  5. Repair cracks in your home’s foundation.

What if I already have an infestation?

Not sure if silverfish have already made their selves at home in your house? Take a flashlight to dark areas, examine old books and papers, check out the basement and attic, under couches, behind kitchen appliances, and under bathroom sinks. As mentioned before they are nocturnal insects, therefor the best time to check for these pests are at night.
